For over a decade, RTS Cube systems have provided operators with critical real-time deflection, tilt, and attitude data from underwater structures. As parts of the hardware approached end-of-life, RTS sought to enhance the platform’s performance and future readiness. Seeking a more robust acoustic communication partner, RTS conducted rigorous testing of Subnero’s M25M modems, built on the highly flexible UnetStack software-defined networking framework.

The newly published case study highlights how researchers, led by Dr. Roee Diamant, utilized Subnero modems to bypass the closed architectures of traditional commercial acoustic systems. By leveraging Subnero’s open, software-defined platform, the ANL team successfully implemented multiple advanced sensing applications such as midwater Doppler motion estimation, lab-grade transducer characterization, and 3D biological tracking using active and passive sonar techniques without the need for expensive, time-consuming custom hardware development.

Subnero platform’s features such as direct access to raw passband and baseband streaming, multiple receiving channels, onboard processing via an integrated Jetson Orin coprocessor enabled researchers to run complex, Python-based algorithms directly on the device.

Internet of the Oceans – A Connected Ocean Begins in Singapore with Underwater Cellular Network Launch

Singapore, December 11, 2025 – Subnero Pte Ltd. today announced a breakthrough milestone for global maritime technology. The company has successfully deployed and demonstrated an underwater cellular network in Singapore waters, delivered in partnership with ST Engineering Unmanned & Integrated Systems (ST UIS).. It represents one of the world’s earliest commercial implementations of a subsea network designed to provide continuous coverage, seamless mobility and real time tracking for subsea assets. This work forms the foundation of what Subnero calls the Internet of the Oceans.

With the acceleration in offshore energy exploration and operations, in-water robotics, defence operations and ocean research, the need for a reliable, scalable and mobile underwater communication fabric is becoming critical. Traditional underwater acoustic systems have been limited to short distances or point-to-point links. This deployment shows that underwater networks can now behave like terrestrial cellular systems and support multiple mobile and stationary assets as they move through the mission area, enabling the next wave of scale in traditionally complex subsea operations.

Bringing Terrestrial Cellular Network Principles to the Depths

The deployment consisted of three buoy-mounted Subnero M25M-series smart modems that acted as subsea base stations. Each buoy created a ‘cell’ with planned overlap, similar to traditional terrestrial radio network planning. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and underwater sensors equipped with Subnero M25M-series modems for communications were able to remain connected while moving between the cells. The network supported two-way communication, command and control messaging, telemetry exchange and real time localization and tracking – exhibiting terrestrial mobile network principles, applied underwater.

Key Technical Outcomes

Across multiple trials, the network delivered three major results.

Continuous Communication Assets maintained uninterrupted links while transitioning between coverage zones. This mirrors how mobile devices switch between terrestrial towers.
Continuous Tracking and Situational Awareness Real time positional updates were available whenever assets were covered by multiple base stations, similar to multi-point localization techniques used in terrestrial networks. This allows safer and more coordinated underwater operations.
Scalable and Flexible Architecture The system demonstrated that adding more base stations naturally extends coverage and capacity. This enables large scale subsea communication grids across ports, naval bases, offshore installations and research zones.

Unlocking New Possibilities for the Subsea Economy

The deployment represents a significant step toward a connected ocean. AUVs, divers, long duration sensors and marine robots can now operate within a shared, persistent and intelligent communication fabric.

This type of network has never been deployed at commercial scale in Asia, and it positions Singapore as a global pioneer in connected-ocean infrastructure. Improving Underwater Communication with Subnero Multi-Receiver Modems

Underwater acoustic communication faces several physical limitations: restricted bandwidth, long propagation delays, severe multipath—especially in shallow waters—Doppler effects, and high ambient noise. Traditional modems with a single receiver rely heavily on sophisticated signal processing, but performance is ultimately constrained by the quality of the signal captured at that one location. If the receiving element happens to sit in a deep null or a locally noisy patch, recovery becomes difficult. Many underwater systems also require localization and tracking, which often rely on separate hardware such as USBL arrays or dedicated receivers, adding to overall operational complexity.

Subnero’s multi-receiver modems address both needs at once—capturing multiple spatially separated signals for improved communication robustness while also enabling bearing estimation and positioning capabilities within the same platform. This enhances communication performance, reduces hardware requirements, simplifies integration, and streamlines operations in the field.

Why Multiple Receiving Channels Matter?

Adding multiple receivers introduces receive diversity. Each hydrophone receives a slightly different version of the signal, giving the modem more information to work with. Even in degraded conditions, combining information from all hydrophones increases the likelihood of successful decoding. This forms the basis of Single-Input–Multiple-Output (SIMO) systems, which provide higher receive gain, improved signal-to-noise ratio, and more resilient communication performance.

Practical Impact on Throughput and Range

The benefits are often substantial.

A user experiencing 30–40% packet loss with a single-receiver modem may see losses drop to under 5% with just one additional receiver, depending on spatial placement.
With three or four receivers, overall loss can approach near-zero, resulting in a highly stable link even in difficult environments.

These gains translate directly into higher effective throughput, longer communication ranges, and far more consistent performance in dynamic or shallow-water deployments.

Multiple receivers unlock capabilities that are particularly valuable for research users:

Acoustic communications research Users can test SIMO-based techniques, spatial combining, direction-of-arrival estimation, multipath mitigation strategies, or advanced PHY/MAC concepts. Subnero modems provide access to raw data streams from all receivers, making them flexible testbeds for developing and validating new communication algorithms.
Navigation and tracking research With hydrophones placed at different spatial locations, researchers can implement Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA), Phase Difference of Arrival (PDOA), or hybrid methods to estimate range, bearing, or full 3D position. This enables experiments in underwater localization using the same hardware platform.

These features allow teams to use Subnero’s multi-receiver modems not only as communication devices but also as versatile platforms for scientific experimentation and algorithm development.

Operational Applications Enabled by Multiple Receiving Channels

Beyond research, multiple receiving hydrophones support a wide range of real-world applications:

Bearing estimation of underwater sources
Target tracking, depending on array geometry
Array-based sensing and environmental characterization
Custom USBL-style processing using user-developed algorithms

Subnero modems additionally support external GPS PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) input for absolute timing and optional AHRS sensors (Attitude and Heading Reference System) to provide orientation information when required.

Beyond Communications: Passive Acoustic Sensing

Multi-receiver modems can also act as capable passive acoustic monitoring systems. By fusing information from multiple receivers, users can estimate the range and bearing of acoustic sources—useful for rapid environmental assessment, situational awareness, or wildlife monitoring. The tests, conducted in the Gulf of Mexico, benchmarked Subnero’s deep-rated modem performance during vertical communication trials down to 2300 meters. Mounted on Nauticus’ flagship subsea robot Aquanaut, the modems maintained continuous communication with a topside unit deployed from a mothership. Subnero Successfully Demonstrates Interoperability using SWiG Standard at WUWNET 2024

Subnero recently participated in an interoperability test at the WUWNET 2024 conference in Šibenik, Croatia. The goal of the event was to demonstrate seamless communication between acoustic modems from various vendors using the Subsea Wireless Group’s (SWiG) acoustic Level 1 standard specification. We were thrilled to successfully showcase interoperability alongside EvoLogics GmbH, WSENSE and NORCE (research modem) during an in-water demonstration in the Adriatic Sea.

The test setup consisted of one transmitter and four receivers from various participating companies. The transmitting modem broadcasted positioning messages using the SWiG Level 1 standard, while the receivers from various vendors decoded and displayed the information. The shallow water depth and rocky bottom provided a challenging acoustic propagation environment, but it effectively demonstrated the functionality of the SWiG standard in real-world conditions.

The test day unfolded as follows. The transmitter modem on a moving boat transmitted SL1 messages containing its location every few seconds. The receivers on the pier successfully decoded these messages and displayed the results in real-time on a map. A research modem from NORCE also served as a hydrophone, providing real-time spectrograms of the underwater transmissions.

At the same time, another research modem transmitted High Data Rate Channel (HDC) packets based on the Dual Channel Acoustic Protocol (DCAP), while the transmitter modem on the boat continued to send positioning messages. The receiving modems attempted to simultaneously decode both waveforms. If the HDC packets could not be decoded, the receivers would switch to decoding Simultaneous Multiple Access Channel (SMAC) packets from DCAP. The test successfully demonstrated the flexibility of DCAP for handling different data transmission needs.

This collaboration between multiple vendors paves the way for more standardized and interoperable subsea acoustic communication solutions in the future. Designed specifically for long-range subsea wireless communication, the L12L series is engineered to deliver exceptional performance in even the most challenging underwater environments. With a communication range exceeding 10 km or data rates configurable up to 8 kbps, this modem is ideal for applications requiring robust, reliable, and efficient wireless communication in difficult conditions.
