UnetStack 7 Released - A New Generation of Underwater Networking

We are excited to announce the release of UnetStack 7, the next generation of the software-defined framework that powers underwater communication networks, from research testbeds to Subnero’s smart modems in the field. Developed as part of the Unet project at the Acoustic Research Laboratory (ARL), National University of Singapore, together with Subnero, UnetStack 7 carries forward everything the framework is known for: an agent-based network stack, a built-in simulator, and one codebase that runs the same from desktop simulation to deployment at sea.

Alongside the release, unetstack.net has been rebuilt from the ground up. The new site walks through what UnetStack is, its architecture, and its editions, and offers the UnetStack 7 community edition as a free download for teaching and research use.

Updated Whitepaper: Unlocking Underwater Connectivity

Our whitepaper, “Unlocking Underwater Connectivity: Exploring the UnetStack Framework for Subsea Communications and Networking”, has been revised to reflect UnetStack 7 and the ecosystem around it. The September 2026 revision covers who UnetStack serves and how, the simulation ecosystem spanning UnetSim, hardware-in-the-loop testing with the Virtual Acoustic Ocean, and UnetCloud, and the hardware path from UnetCube to Subnero’s smart modems, along with the UnetStack architecture and editions.
